. and also you have all these pro union protests happening not too far away in lansing, michigan. we have a correspondent there as well. we'll talk to here. jessica yellin to you in washington. and, first things first, you think here michigan, you think the birth place of unions and you think about all these people who are very frustrated with this, everything i read, it seems to be pretty much a done deal, this right to work legislation, that the governor has indicated he would sign. these are the folks who helped elect the president not too long ago. should the president step in and go to bat for them? >> well, you know, the unions have been enormously supportive of the president as you point out. not only during this campaign, not only as foot stole jer sold helping get out the vote, but also financially with their dollars. the white house already expressed its support for the unions opposing right to work legislation. one of a white house official put out a statement today, matt lairic, saying in part, let me find the statement, president obama has long opposed so-called right to work

-new cadillac ats. >>> michigan. it's the corner stone of the american labor movement, but could be in for the biggest shake up in its history. despite rallies of union workers in the state capital, michigan lawmakers are on the verge of passing a right to work law. experts say it would be massive symbolic blow to the labor movement. susan candiotti is on the line with us. they would be forced to pay union dues even though they will stild enjoy the benefits of contracts. if this becomes law, what would it mean for unions and what kind of political path they can carry after this? >> that is the question, isn't it? politically, it could be a major blow to unions. last month in michigan, voters rejected a referendum that would have made this unconstitutional. passage could also make unions in the private sector obsolete. if the law passes, union supporters are convinced pay and benefits could take a big hit. the later bureau of labor statistics for 2011 put the immedia median salary for full time union workers at about $940 a week. compared to about $730 a week for nonunion workers.

in michigan could change the course of the nation's labor movement. that's because the state's house and senate are trying to hammer out some legislation there that's going to make michigan the 24th right to work state. opponents say that will lower wages and benefits and hurt the middle class and that strong unions built michigan's middle class. but supporters say the legislation will spark economic growth and encourage fairness. our alison kosik is live in lansing with the latest. i know they're really bracing for an onslaught of people. specifically by tomorrow. lay out the essentials of the story for me if you would. >> exactly. they are police are bracing for what's to come tomorrow. right now is sort of the quiet before the storm. you know, you see the barricades going up here and there is a pretty good police presence here today in and around the state capital building here in michigan in preparation for who's to come because last week, we got a taste of it. thousands of demonstrators descends upon this building as these votes were coming through on this right to work law. and

michigan and show you and tell you what's happening there. there are large protests, basically closing down the state capitol building here. this is lansingmy, michigan. eight people arrested. there are a couple thousand people protesting inside the building. a number of them outside the capitol building. police, they say they're not letting anyone else inside. 50 state troopers are there on the ground. protests are over a push by the governor of michigan, rick snyder to make michigan a right to work state. letting workers in michigan decide whether or not they want to join unions. so the capitol is scheduled to close in just about two and a half hours from now. so police say anyone who refuses to leave will be arrested and will be charged with trespa trespassing. >>> i want to talk about this, though. one of the biggest companies, the biggest companies without a doubt in the world moving jobs out of china. bringing them back to america. apple c eo tim cook with this announcement. >> so we've been working for years on doing more and more in the united states. next year, one of the existing
